When a 101-year-old person can make new muscle cells it would be good to know how that happens and what we can learn from it. It has long been assumed that aging is a one-way process of decline but what is emerging is that this is not necessarily the case.

The simple process, which allows a centenarian to make new muscle cells, is resistance training. Yes it surprised me too in that both new muscle could be laid down at that age and that people of 100 can do resistance training.

Research on residents in aged care facilities with an average age of 89 was done to see what impact resistance training would have on sarcopenia. This is the loss of muscle mass that happens as we age. It contributes to falls, loss of strength and osteoporosis. It was found that doing as little as three sets of six to eight repetitions of exercise on alternate days was enough to help develop new muscle and stop muscle loss. The weight required to be used was that which the person found "heavy" and would be only able to do a maximum of eight repetitions.

The term progressive resistance training applies where over time people may use slightly heavier weights so that there is an ongoing challenge to the muscles.

When we think of exercise, often all people consider is cardiovascular training like running or bike riding. Resistance training has been seen as the domain of bodybuilders. It has even been seen as potentially dangerous!

Yet in the studies, people with high blood pressure, diabetes and even a cardiac pacemaker were able to manage resistance training.

The benefits of resistance training have also been demonstrated now in children aged 10 to 15. In this age group the children doing some resistance exercises had lower rates of insulin resistance (pre-diabetes) and had better weight control than other children.

There are numerous health benefits from resistance training but lets focus on just one.

Falls can be one of the most debilitating events in life for older people. It can trigger a chain of events, which impacts on independence. There is much fanfare about using drugs to "treat" osteoporosis and hence prevent falls. The reality is that no pill stops a fall. Better balance, stronger muscles and stronger bones make falls less likely. The chances of breaking one are also less likely even in the event of a fall.

So what do we need for healthy bones and muscle maintenance?

1) Do some resistance training two or three times a week. As little as three sets of six to eight repetitions is enough but aim to do more as time goes by.

2) Get enough calcium. This means about 1200mg. per day from food or supplements. Beware that low acid in the stomach can reduce calcium absorption. A little apple cider or red wine vinegar helps absorption of calcium.

3) Get enough vitamin D. We need at least 1000 I.U. per day from diet supplement or a bit of sunshine. Interestingly calcium absorption is improved when the body has enough vitamin D.

Looking after the body is not hard. Whilst osteoporosis has been made something fearful and pills are presented as an antidote to falls-the reality is the three simple measures outlined above are the best way to care for your muscles and bones

Most endocrine disorders are not deeply understood by patients. A man with diabetes mellitus can say "I’m advised to control my sugar intake" without a strong understanding of why he needs to do so. At times, some patients who have just been referred to the endocrinology department even find it hard to remember that their doctors are called "endocrinologists." We really can’t blame them. The endocrine system in itself is complex. It is a group of glands located in different parts of the body which secrete hormones that control reproduction, growth and development, and metabolism. That overview alone is enough for a patient to just stare blankly at the endocrinologist, especially when he or she has little or no background at all on the subject. Even the endocrinologist will find it challenging to explain the problem in simple terms, considering that the system is a very broad subject.

If you are a patient with an endocrine system disorder, you would want to be spared from all those scientific and medical terminologies, and simply concentrate on the information that is most essential about your condition. That will save the breath of your endocrinologist, as well as your energy in understanding the situation.

Patients, know your illness

Endocrinologists share the diagnosis to their patients after a series of confirmatory tests and health history taking. Most of the time, though, the explanation becomes too scientific. This leaves the patient at a loss and can only recall very little information about the diagnosis, which should not be the case. The diagnosis is for the patient. Therefore, it is not enough for him or her to know how the illness is called. The patient has the right to know every important detail about it in a way that is comprehensible to the layman. Patients should know how they could have possibly acquired the illness, if is it treatable, or what should be done for it not to worsen. If there is a need to describe a process, then the explanation must be concise, and the patient’s level of understanding should be considered as well. Give the endocrinologist a light nudge if what he’s discussing is already beyond comprehension. Patients should also have access to their laboratory and assessment results. Even if the patient cannot make sense of the documents at hand, the endocrinologist can use them as a guide in further explaining the diagnosis.

Patients, know your way out of the illness

The treatment course is undoubtedly the most important information that an endocrinologist should discuss with a patient. Since the treatment course is something that a patient should comply with, it is paramount that the patient should understand it. It should be a partnership action between the endocrinologist and the patient. If there are scheduled procedures, the patient should be well-informed of it and how the procedure is to be done. For medications, endocrinologists should give both the generic name and the brand name, and explain the dosage and frequency to the patient clearly. The patient should also be informed of the treatment schedule and duration. Special considerations and diet restrictions should also be reiterated to the patient accordingly. For example, diabetic patients must be advised to control sweets, while patients with hypothyroidism should wear thick sweatshirts as they are sensitive to cold.

Patients, know your health status

An illness concerning the endocrine is a life-changing factor. The feeling of uncertainty and grief clouds every patient’s mind. If you see yourself in this situation, do not be afraid to ask any questions regarding your illness. Patients may ask how serious the illness is, and the endocrinologist should explain it with tact. If there is something that needs to be clarified, raise it without hesitation. Make sure that, before you step out of the office, you have a fairly good idea of your diagnosis and how to manage it.

The endocrine system in itself is complex system that needs to be managed well. If you have been diagnosed with a endocrine illness, it is important for you to fully understand it as well as the treatment that you have been prescribed, the probability of success and the full extent of the side effects.   據英國媒體報道,英國發明家詹姆士·戴森最近推出了一款新發明無葉片風扇,這種新型電扇叫戴森空氣增加器,它能產生神奇的涼風,由於沒有葉片,不會覆蓋塵土,或者傷到好奇兒童的手指。
  該產品已於10月12日推出,詹姆士解釋說,他在發明空氣葉片干手器時獲得這一靈感。空氣葉片干手器的原理是迫使空氣經過一個小口來“刷”干手上的水。他說:“我們注意到干手器吸引周圍的大量空氣。因此,我們開始考慮如何應用這一效應。我們考慮研制一個不需要旋槳或扇片的空氣流動裝置。三年的研發加上一年的試驗,結果就是我們現在的戴森空氣增加器。”

  戴森空氣增加器是讓空氣從一個1.3毫米寬、繞著圓環轉動的切口裡吹出來。由於空氣是被強制從這一圓圈裡吹出來的,通過的空氣量可增到15倍,它的時速可增至35公裡。詹姆士稱,重要的是這種空氣流動比普通風扇產生的風更平穩。他說:“它產生的空氣量相當於目前市場上性能最好的風扇。我們不會說你可以得到更多空氣,但是,它的質量很好。因為沒有風扇片來‘切割’空氣,你不會感到沖擊和刺激。它通過持續的空氣流讓你感覺涼爽。”

  這種機器分大小兩類,呈金屬色。原型售價199英鎊。和大多數桌上風扇一樣,它能轉動90度,但是,與其他風扇不同的是它由變光開關控制。當然,由於沒有葉片,不會覆蓋塵土,或者傷到好奇兒童的手指。

  空氣增加器現已在特別設計商店和哈羅德商場以及塞爾福裡奇百貨公司具有出售,到明年年初會在其他地方出售。62歲、身價5000萬英鎊的詹姆士在上世紀90年代他的蒸汽吸塵器大獲成功后,已經被稱為英國最著名的發明家

天然的去污高手....馬鈴薯

馬鈴薯又名土豆,是家庭經常食用的一種蔬菜,土豆皮幾乎都被當成垃圾廢棄物扔掉。

其實,各種水果皮,都可以利用其天然酵素做為清潔用途,馬鈴薯皮當然也有它的用處喔!

【除茶漬】

喝茶的杯、壺用久了會形成茶漬、茶垢,這種黏附在茶具內壁的茶漬很難清除,而且會越積越厚,茶漬中含有鉻、鉛、砷等很多種對人體有害的重金屬物質,一定要經常清除茶漬才利於身體健康。 老一輩的長輩有人或許會用炭灰或細沙去刷,但這樣既費力又攪得有一點亂。

但如果使用馬鈴薯皮就不同於往昔,因為馬鈴薯皮含有大量的澱粉,當遇到高溫時,澱粉會形成具有吸附和去污能力的膠體溶液,是清除茶漬的好材料。且馬鈴薯本身的生物酵素具有分解油污的效力。雙效合一去污力加倍。

◆ 使用方法:

把馬鈴薯皮放到茶具中,倒入開水,加蓋放置5~10分鐘,然後將其倒出,用清水沖洗茶具即可。

環保又健康的廚房清理

在現在環保意識日益抬頭的情形下清潔廚房最好、最便宜也最自然簡單的方式之一,便是使用廚房中常見的用品,
例如鹽加水、鹽加醋、鹽加檸檬汁、鹽加美乃滋。這些方法可以清潔盤子、鍋子跟任
何廚房用品。想想看,你只要花十五元買一包鹽、三十元買一瓶醋、四十元買一包蘇
打粉,就可以清潔家中的房間,但若以同樣的使用量來購買化學(或石化)清潔劑,則要花費數
倍的金錢。而且使用上述方法還可少接觸石化或化學成份既環保又省錢。

【醋的妙用】 
醋有如萬用清潔劑,因為醋就是乙酸,可以溶於油,擦拭之後能輕易帶走油污。另
外,用醋擦拭櫥櫃上的金屬把手也可以防鏽。

不沾鍋的處理方式非常簡單,不用將剩餘的油倒進洗碗槽裡,只要烹調完畢後
讓油脂凝結後用紙巾擦拭。如果還有殘留油漬,直接用醋清洗即可。另外,你也可以
倒出鍋中所有的油,然後將兩杯鹽撒在鍋底完全浸入油中,用紙巾輕輕擦拭即可。

每次清理煎鍋或油炸鍋的外緣時,用抹布沾醋擦拭便能快速去油。

將烤箱中的烤盤浸泡在混合有二杯醋與一公升的熱水中,放置一小時,殘餘物
馬上可以清除乾淨。如果你有金屬或鋁製烤盤,可以用1:1的鹽與醋混合後擦拭,再
將之烘乾。

若你習慣使用一般鍋子裝食物放在烤箱中烘烤,卻又為難洗的鍋子大傷腦筋,
你可以混合一杯清醋跟三湯匙的糖,在烘烤完後倒入烤鍋中,等它冷卻後再用熱肥
皂水清洗,並以清水洗淨,如此會將殘餘物除去,鍋子也會洗得乾乾淨淨。因為糖可
以吸油,若糖溶解在水裡能讓油更易與糖水相溶

奇異果.番茄 多食可代謝塑化劑

This morning  (June 2, 2011) we walked by the nest again - still just one adult, the dark one, circling above.




Again there are only two chicks visible, but looking from the other side it seems possible that there is a third.
The single parent will have a hard time raising even two. It's hot and extremely dry and the cows have diminished what brush cover there was. We wish them luck!
